KHAMIS MASHAYT, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - Lt. Gen. Michael Garrett, the commander of U.S. Army Central, met with military members of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia July 18-20. Garrett spoke with numerous senior military officials about current events within the region, joint operations and troop training procedures.

Senior Saudi military leaders took Garrett on a tour of the Royal Saudi Land Forces Artillery and Infantry Institutes at King Faisel Military City. The tour showcased the institute’s curriculum and demonstrated how the instructors achieve their training goals by mentally and physically challenging their students.

Garrett was invited to be a guest speaker at a seminar for senior leaders and officer students from the KSA Artillery and Infantry Institute. During his brief, he stressed the importance of small unit leadership and the principles of taking care of Soldiers.

“Your Soldiers have to be able to look at you and know what the standard is and through your inspiring leadership, desire to be like you.” Garrett said, you must genuinely care about them and give them your best every day.
The students were very appreciative of the chance to hear Garrett speak and listened intently to his advice.

“It was a great opportunity to meet such an experienced leader and learn from him,” said Lt. Nuif Saad Al Thwabi, a student attending the Infantry Institute.

Maj. Gen. Yah-ya Eben Zahem, RSLF Infantry Institute commander, said the majority of officers graduating from the institute will be sent to combat immediately after training so what they learn here is crucial to their success as a leader.

“I look forward to taking what I’ve learned today about how to care for Soldiers and implementing it with my troops in combat,” said Thwabi.

Throughout the visit, Soldiers and leaders from both countries shared knowledge and previous experiences with each another, further fostering a strong lasting partnership between the U.S. and KSA.

Showing genuine hospitality, the RSLF Southern Command senior leaders surprised Garrett with a special cultural tour and feast at the Bin Hamsan Heritage Village in Khamees Musheet.
