TEMA, Ghana -- U.S. Marines led intelligence training for the Ghanaian Navy July 11-22, 2016 at Ghana’s Eastern Command Naval Headquarters here.
Marines from the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Africa and sailors from Combined Task Force-68 focused on improving intelligence analysis, report writing, and understanding of intelligence support to maritime operations during the training. Once graduated the Ghanaian sailors will become instructors for their Navy’s internal intelligence.
“These two week courses have already provided immediate dividends and are incorporated into the student’s daily jobs,” said 1stLt Jack Lowder, the intelligence security cooperation officer with SPMAGTF-CR-AF. “There will be one more course in the fall and after that the Ghanaian students will begin instructing their own courses.”
The intent of the entire curriculum is to see Ghanaians teaching tactical-level intelligence courses to their own forces. The Marines pursued this end by establishing a base line intelligence capability for the Ghanaian Sailors and Maritime Police then improving on their skills and experiences with a demanding academic and training schedule.
“At the conclusion of this course, Ghanaian Sailors and Maritime Police trainees have demonstrated a great appreciation for the role of intelligence in combatting drug smuggling and illegal fishing,” said 1stLt Nathaniel Lowry.
Sharing these skills with partner nations helps improve internal security and enable host nations to conduct their own stability operations, denying adversaries an environment in which to operate.
All of the TIS2MOC events directly correlate with each other and build on the foundations built in the previous iterations. This event gives the students the ability to take all of the collection skills they have learned and effectively analyze their gathered intelligence in order to give assessments and recommendations to their commanders.
