ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – Not more than four months ago, a group of Soldiers from the 38th Ordnance Company (EOD) took part in the joint Operation Shamal Storm in support of United Kingdom EOD troops along with Jordanian forces in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The British combat-like logistics exercise aims to ensure the UK can deploy a 30,000-strong force of tanks and troops to a crisis zone anywhere in the world. It starts in London for some familiarization exercises, and then they move to the Jordanian desert.
Training officials immediately made it clear Operation Shamal Storm, which has been held for many years, was not a “dress rehearsal” to prepare for Islamic State in Iraq and Levant militants.
“This isn’t a counter-ISIL exercise,” said a British army official. “If anything, this is much more about us being prepared to join the U.S. in Ukraine than it is in Syria. “This is not the sort of kind of force you expect to roll into Aleppo to take on a bunch of jihadists.”
The purpose for the 38th EOD to go through this exercise is to train on interoperability in the latest explosives ordnance disposal and search capabilities in order to be more agile in deterring threats to NATO allies.
The 38th EOD Company is part of 63rd Ordnance Battalion (EOD), 52nd EOD Group, 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives). The 20th CBRNE is the only unit in the U.S. military with counter-CBRNE global capabilities.
