MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Over the centuries, stories of ancient Greek Spartans have inspired military heroes to hone their warrior spirit. On a scorching summer day in North Carolina, Marines of Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 embodied the spirit of those legendary warriors as they competed head-to-head during the squadron’s annual Spartan Cup, here, July 22.

The squadron hosted the 3rd annual Spartan Cup to strengthen unit camaraderie between its three companies. Marines from each company competed I nmultiple events in the hopes of winning bragging right until next year’s competition.

“Everybody knows that Marines are very competitive, but we know how to keep it friendly,” said Staff Sgt. Rudy Gonzalez, an administrative specialist with MWCS-28. “You have the Marines participating in their selected event and the Marines on the sidelines cheering them on to give them that extra boost.”

The day started with a squadron run followed by various team-based events, such as squad pull-ups, weapons disassembly and reassembly, Humvee push, Tug-of-War, and an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Training competition.

“It is evident that you see the camaraderie up and down the chain of command,” said Gonzalez. “You have the junior Marines being cheered on by the officers and staff noncommissioned officers and vice versa.”

Among the cheering and exuberance was a meaningful message: readiness.

“A part of the Marine Corps mission is making sure your Marines are fit for battle,” said Lance Cpl. Randy Myers, an administrative specialist with MWCS-28. “Events like this show how the Marines still have the drive to complete the mission even after being physically exhausted.”

Winners competed for four trophies. The winner of the Spartan guidon was Bravo Company. Headquarters Services Company was awarded three trophies: the Spartan spear, shield, and helmet.

“Being a Spartan is all about the attitude you have, how much work you put in and how much dedication you have to completing the mission,” said Myers. “Spartans are hands down the best.”
