For the first time in 11 years, a U.S. Army Alaska Soldier has been awarded the 2016 Blacks in Government Military Meritorious Service Award for the Department of the Army.
Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Lindquist, Equal Opportunity Advisor for the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, devotes his time to volunteer work and believes this award isn’t just his.
“I was very humbled when I received the news,” said Lindquist. “I felt that this was a big win not just for me, but for the entire team.”
The award, which is part of the DoD Diversity Outreach Awards Program, honors military members and DoD civilian employees, men and women, who have supported the DoD mission, overseas contingency operations, or whose attributes best epitomized the qualities and core values of their respective Military Service or other DoD Component.
Originally from Southside Jamaica Queens, N.Y, the sergeant first class joined the Army 15 years ago following in the footsteps of his family, determined to make an impact on others.
“As a Soldier, you are a pillar of your community however you must stand strong upon the foundation that supports you and others,” Lindquist says. “Provide mentorship through education, charity to those in need, hope to those who are loss, and faith through friendship and inspiration. With all these tools of fidelity, this will define and bring forth a light within Soldiers to shine not only in the military but in society as well.”
It is these beliefs that made the sergeant first class a clear standout according to Dr. Doris Sartor, Blacks in Government National Executive Vice President.
“His steadfast loyalty and commitment to equity, diversity and the community along with his on-duty and off-duty activities demonstrates his commitment to the tenets of civil/human rights, equal opportunity, human relations and public service,” Dr. Sartor said. “He constantly displays exceptional character as a role model and mentor.”
Lindquist will receive the award at the President's Reception during the 38th Annual Blacks In Government National Training Institute on August 23rd.
