JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- I Corps welcomed its new deputy commanding general during a ceremony at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Aug. 9.
Maj. Gen. Mark R. Stammer joined the I Corps team after commanding the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.
“My family and I look forward to serving with America’s Corps and carry on its traditions,” said Stammer.
Stammer enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1982 and was later commissioned as an infantry officer.
“Stammer is going to be an important part of the command team at I Corps,” said Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, I Corps commanding general. “He is a trusted and combat-tested leader, and he understands the importance of being a leader of competence, character and commitment.”
According to Lanza, Stammer understands what it takes to build and sustain readiness, and that will be helpful when he develops the next generation of leaders, both at JBLM and in the Pacific region.
“Although we train, deploy and redeploy our service members and organizations throughout the Pacific Command area of responsibility, we also support other combatant commands,” said Stammer. “This reminds us that I Corps has enduring regional and global commitments like no other military organization.”
Stammer summarized what leadership meant with one word, “inspire.” He stated one can inspire others with actions, and that one doesn’t have to be right next to someone to lead them.
“His leadership is what is required in an environment that is both unpredictable and unstable. He will continue to motivate, shape and inspire our next generation of leaders,” said Lanza.
