SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. — Team Shaw celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday here, Jan. 21-22.
The Martin Luther King 2016 Committee hosted numerous events to honor this historical figure.
Guest speakers Donovan Summers, a 12-year-old motivational speaker, and Mark Myers, a local business owner, gave speeches at the base theater Jan. 21, following a video on the history of King.
“He (King) said ‘I think we’ve got to learn to disagree, without being violently disagreeable,’” said Summers. “When the country wasn’t prepared to hear the truth, he spoke about it, marched about it and died about it.”
A basketball tournament took place Jan. 22. The 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron team won the tournament, beating three other teams.
“When you look at history, the cool thing about it is that you can always learn lessons from it,” said Staff Sgt. Isaiah Resto, 20th Comptroller Squadron financial services supervisor and member of the MLK 2016 Committee, “So when you look at the impact of Martin Luther King and what he contributed, you can look back at exactly the different things he spoke about in his speeches and it still applies today.”
Due to inclement weather, a 5K in commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was rescheduled to Jan. 29, at 7 a.m.
