JACKSON, Miss. – Staff Sgt. Jack T. Marsh accepted the National Guard Bureau Award for Maintenance Excellence, Aviation Division, on behalf of Company D, 1st Battalion, 185th Regiment during a ceremony at Hawkins Field, August 13, 2016.

“We received the AAME from the National Guard Bureau. It was a competition for maintenance, ground maintenance, throughout NGB, and we won our region. We competed at the Department of Army level, against other units that are in our same category aviation,” said Marsh.

Winners of the AAME have to display an expertise and professionalism in performing their task. For this award, each unit is evaluated on their effectiveness in ensuring that Soldier competency is maintained.

After winning their division at the NGB level, the unit finished in the top three against units from throughout the Army components (including the active Army and Army Reserve).

“We are an aviation unit, and this was a ground award. Our job is to keep the helicopter running, but this is like secondary for this unit. It’s more than just doing their job, because it was maintaining all the vehicles, the weapons, the mask, and anything that would have to do with any kind of PMCS (Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services) on services. Anything! Most of the focus goes to the helicopter here, so it means our guys have had to work extra hard just to maintain both,” Marsh stated.

Marsh explains his unit’s role in relation to aviation maintenance.

“Our unit does all the maintenance for the 1-185th Aviation's as far as their helicopter maintenance for the Black Hawks. We maintain all of them to make sure they are ready for the pilots to fly,” states Marsh.

Others factors may have been determined by the NGB for the award that was given but Marsh said it was more than those factors that brought the win in for this award.

“I believe, what makes this company so significant is the Soldiers are here for each other more so in a lot of units. Their friends, the cohesion is excellent and all of them are willing to chip in to their part and all do just that. From the lowest level to the highest level they all know their job and all know what they need to accomplish from day to day,” said Marsh.

The unit not only won over the NGB with their skills but they have made a great impact on Marsh and how he determined a decision in his military career.

“This unit actually made me stay a little longer, I was going to retire last year. The move to this unit made me realize how much I was going to miss it, and how much I enjoy being a supply sergeant in the Mississippi National Guard,” Marsh said.
