FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – Construction of a new engineering annex designed for auto repair and carpentry classes at the al Kut Vo-Tech concluded with a ribbon cutting ceremony, June 17.
The governor of Wasit province, Lateef Hamad, and Robert Kagler, leader of Provincial Reconstruction Team Wasit, attended the ceremony to officially open the annex.
The $75,000 project also included construction of storage facilities, upgrades to student bathrooms and delivery of a new generator. Funds for the project were drawn from Commander's Emergency Response Program funds.
CERP funds are used to pay local nationals to rebuild their communities, said Sgt. 1st Class Karen Brown, 214th FB administrative non-commissioned officer in charge.
The new facilities brought the center's capacity to 1,500 students. Available courses include auto repair, sewing, computer service, covering hardware and software, carpentry, masonry and metal work.
Classes at the Vo-Tech center continued during the eight-month project, and 260 students were in attendance at the center the day of the opening, said Eman Mahmood, center administrator.
