(NAVAL AIR STATION FORT WORTH JOINT RESERVE BASE, Texas)— Sergeant Jeanette G. Garcia, an Administrative Specialist with Marine Aircraft Group-41, is an instructor for Corporal’s Course currently being held at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base in Texas. Garcia takes pride in her role of helping Marines learn to become effective and admirable noncommissioned officers throughout this course.
“The biggest transition in the Marine Corps is from Lance Corporal to Corporal,” explained Garcia. “You are no longer a junior Marine, you are a leader and people are looking up to you as a mentor now. You have to learn to take care of Marines. I love getting to help others learn that.”
Corporals Course is an education program for Marine corporals that places emphasis on the development of basic leadership skills and responsibilities as an NCO. This Corporal’s Course has 17 students, eight instructors, and lasts for three weeks.
A typical day in Corporal’s Course involves early-morning physical training sessions, several lectures, sword manual, and leadership and discussion time. The course also has some exciting events planned, such as a mess night for the Marines and a culminating event which combines all aspects of the course, such as land navigation and operations, into one rigorous exercise.
“Courses like this are always very beneficial, especially to us reservists,” said Garcia. “You aren’t exposed to Marine Corps history, tactical communication, Marine Corps operations, and stuff like that all the time. These courses are good refreshers, and they strike up your motivation.”
Garcia, a 27 year-old dental hygienist from Red Oak, Texas, is a reserve Marine and a second-time instructor for Corporals Course. Garcia is in charge of teaching the group about Tactical Communication, Fundamentals of Marine Corps Leadership, and Mentoring Subordinates and Career Progression—which is Garcia’s favorite area to teach.
“I enjoy being an instructor,” said Garcia. “It’s great getting to see these Marines grow throughout the course.”
Garcia’s enthusiasm for her role as a Corporal’s Course instructor is evident as she speaks about her role in developing Marines as people, service members, and leaders. “I love getting to look out for Marines, and getting to be a mentor,” said Garcia, “Mentoring is a huge deal. The relationships we create are so important, especially so we can easily reach out to Marines in need.”
