WASHINGTON -- Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling’s medical clinic now offers physical therapy Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m to help meet the needs of base patients.
The service started May 16.
“We looked at bringing that service to JBAB patients to enhance their patient-centered experience,” said Air Force Col. Michelin Y. Joplin, commander of the 579th Medical Group on JBAB.
Previously patients left the base to attend physical therapy appointments — taking time away from their jobs and lives to fight D.C. traffic, which can be heavily congested at times.
The clinic, together with the National Capital Region enhanced Multi-Service Market (eMSM), worked quickly to provide a solution for patients, said Air Force Maj. Lisa Palmer, JBAB medical services flight commander.
They arranged to bring Army Maj. Scott Kushner, a physical therapist from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, to the base for a year-long trial.
“I think this a great example of our eMSM at work,” Palmer said. “We were able to objectively demonstrate a need and the eMSM was able to pivot and respond.”
With a physical therapist, the clinic is able to provide therapy for a small percentage of patients with initial musculoskeletal injuries, bringing back an anticipated 350 appointments this year.
This opens up availability for patients at other Capital Beltway area facilities and eases the burden on the network.
“You can spread the capability within the eMSM and truly get your patients the care they need and respect their time,” Palmer explained.
To be seen by the base physical therapist, patients need to be enrolled at the Bolling clinic. After being seen by a primary care manager, patients can be referred for physical therapy.
