The 20th Fighter Wing hosted a Women’s Equality Day breakfast here, Aug. 26.

Since 1971, Women’s Equality Day has honored the passing of the 19th Amendment and the efforts of women who have continually pushed for equal rights.

The event brought together Team Shaw members to remember and observe the journey women have made toward equality.

“We are grateful for the women and men who fought so diligently for women’s rights,” said Master Sgt. Latisha Cole, 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs superintendent. “Sometimes we can take for granted their fight because we did not experience it ourselves, but this day allows us to step back and reflect on their contributions.”

During the breakfast, guest speaker Vivian Fleming-McGhaney, Sumter County Council chairman, spoke about American historical figures, both civilian and military, who struggled to gain equality.

“It is wonderful to know that a woman can proudly put on her flight suit, climb into that cockpit and take to the sky,” said Fleming-McGhaney. “I am so elated that there are women in every branch of the armed forces who are doing amazing things. We have come a long way.”

Currently, women make up 15 percent of the Defense Department active duty force and continue to reach new milestones. In April, General Lori Robinson, U.S. Northern Command commander, became the first female combatant commander in the U.S.

Throughout history, women have worked to gain equal rights to their counterparts, from winning the right to vote to gaining access to all military positions.

Although there are still steps to take toward full equality for women, Women’s Equality Day is an opportunity to honor the achievements of past historical figures and present trail blazers.
