Story by Master Sgt. David Johnson

    412th Civil Affairs Battalion (AIRBORNE)

The 412th is based in Columbus, Ohio, but the members of the Family Readiness Group (FRG) travel to wherever the troops go for training. From Indiana to Kentucky to Hocking Hills, Ohio, the members work hard to set up a refreshments table and greet Soldiers.

Time and location are irrelevant to the dedicated FRG team.

When the 412th trains on mountaineering, the FRG sets up at “O-Dark-30” to give the troops a send-off and provide early morning refreshments. If there is an airborne operation hundreds of miles away, the 412th’s FRG leaders find a way to be present.

“I love being able to support our Soldiers and their families anyway possible,” said Mrs. Sara Watson, FRG co-leader. “I grew up in a military family and have seen first-hand how much the team can make a positive impact on Soldiers and their families.”

Such support and dedication resonates throughout the entire group.

“When we are consistently present at all 412th events, and we celebrate the fantastic things our battalion does, the Soldiers get to know us,” said Mrs. Kyla Floyd, the FRG leader.

The presence of the FRG is a welcome relief to the often-tired troops training far away from the Reserve center.

“They even set up for us at Fort Knox,” said Sgt. Seth Davis, of Charlie Company. “I love the drinks better than drinking water out of a camelback.”

The constant presence of the group demonstrates to the entire unit that it can count on FRG support whether it’s a regular training event or an overseas deployment.

The 412th has endured eight deployments since 2003. The troops know how important family readiness and cohesion is.

“Our Soldiers know that in case they need us in the future, the FRG is available to provide information and support to them and their families, whether they are deployed or here at home,” said Floyd.

“I feel that what I do is nothing compared to the sacrifices our Soldiers and their families make, and I'm happy to help in any way I can” added Watson.

Support for the sacrifices of military families is the basis for every FRG. The backing that the 412th receives goes above and beyond, as the troops can testify.
