Camp Pendleton’s Fractal Microgrid provides energy security and energy savings capabilities to critical facilities using renewable energy.

Marine Corps Installations – West’s energy policy states that Microgrids are an essential element for sustaining uninterrupted power, empowering the installation to transition seamlessly between various sources of supplied energy and directly support installations facilities and non-tactical vehicles.

Microgrids can connect and disconnect from the system, enabling them to operate in both grid-connected and island-modes. This means that in the event that a Microgrid goes down, the rest of the system will still be able to function normally.

“A Microgrid is a discrete energy system consisting of distributed energy sources and loads capable of operating in parallel with, or independently from, the main power grid,” said Michael N. Daily, communications strategist with the base energy department.

“A Fractal Microgrid is a ‘Microgrid-of-Microgrids’, capable of maximizing energy efficiencies and ‘self-healing’ when a portion of the power distribution system is interrupted or fails,” added Daily.

The autonomous nature of Microgrids also allows managers to add multiple Microgrids to scale up while mitigating control issues that may arise from the increased scale.

“The Fractal Microgrid solution is capable of expanding organically and infinitely, seamlessly integrating any form of generation, storage, efficiency measure and load into legacy systems and assets,” said Daily. “This hand-off plug-and-play capability allows for adaptability over time and enables a solution that gets better throughout its system life.”

Technicians are able to manage energy savings and energy security at the same time using an integrated command and control system.

Microgrid development remains one of MCI-West’s objectives in securing a supply of energy that is necessary to meet the energy security and energy savings goals of MCI-West installations.
