FIVE HILLS TRAINING AREA, Mongolia – This year’s Non-Lethal Weapons Executive Seminar (NOLES) 2016 officially commenced during the opening ceremony here, Sept. 12, 2016.
Marines from Military Police Company C, 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force, stationed in Okinawa, came to Mongolia to train the Mongolian Armed Forces on non-lethal tactics and techniques. NOLES is scheduled to be conducted Sept. 12-23, and is divided into two portions. The first portion is a Field Training Exercise, which started today, and the second portion is a seminar which will commence Sept. 21 in the city of Ulaanbaatar.
“The NOLES portion we are doing is called the FTX here at Five Hills and then that will transition to the seminar [portion] after the culminating event [demonstration],” said 1st Lt. Michael McDonald, executive officer with Military Police Co. C, 3rd LEB, III MEF.
During the FTX portion, Mongolian service members will learn how to use the X-26 Taser, conduct Oleoresin Capsicum training and exposure, and familiarize with non-lethal munitions, weapons and live-fire, as well as crowd and riot control formations.
“The FTX is the execution of the most up-to-date modern technology: weapons systems; ammo; tactics, technics and procedures for non-lethal operations,” McDonald said. “We will do everything from exposure to OC and Taser, to shooting different weapon systems [like the] M203 grenade launcher, Mossberg 500 shotgun and the M32 grenade launcher.”
During the morning, the Marines conduct various classes to teach the Mongolian service members. During the afternoons, the Mongolian service members practice what they learned in class through various practical application scenarios.
“We are ‘training the trainer;' when individuals come to the FTX, they can see how to implement a proper non-lethal program, they could go back to their units and train their own [service members] in the same foundation that we give them,” McDonald said.
The U.S. military demonstrates its commitment and cooperation in regional security and stability by working and training with various partner nation militaries throughout the Pacific in multinational engagements such as NOLES. This training exercise is an opportunity for all participating nations to enhance interoperability and strengthen military-to-military partnerships through cooperation.
