Cutlass Fury brings together eleven ships, three submarines, twenty-five aircraft, and 3,000 Sailors from Canada, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Primarily focused on anti-submarine warfare, Cutlass Fury also provides a dynamic multi-threat warfare environment, including exercises in mine countermeasures, maritime interdiction operations, air and missile defense coordination, coastal defense and littoral combat, and anti-surface war at sea tactics.
“The world can be an unstable place, and we must be prepared to come together, to fight together, and to meet any challenge that arises together,” said Commodore Craig A. Baines, commander, Canadian Fleet Atlantic. “Above and beyond everything we will achieve during Cutlass Fury, we will build our trust and confidence in each other. We will break down cultural barriers and return from Cutlass Fury better and stronger than we were when we went underway.”
Cutlass Fury 2016 is the largest anti-submarine warfare exercise hosted by Canada in the Atlantic Ocean in over twenty years. The three submarines participating in the exercise offer participants a chance to test and validate a variety of tactics. Exercises of this nature also help increase understanding of NATO allies’ capabilities for each participating country.
U.S. Forces arrived in Halifax on Sept. 8 for the first phase of the exercise, which was focused on fostering partnerships and cooperation between allied countries and included planning conferences, a Consulate reception, and sports matches. Cutlass Fury is hosted by Rear Adm. John Newton, commander, Maritime Forces Atlantic. Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) and USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) are both key participants.
“We are excited for the opportunity to participate in this exercise,” said Cmdr. Hank Allen, commanding officer, USS Bulkeley. “Exercises like these go a long way in developing our interoperability, understanding each other’s capabilities, and refining our tactics against a high-end threat.”
Although the five participating countries have rigorous tactical training programs of their own, Commodore Baines emphasized the significance of Cutlass Fury. “This exercise will exponentially increase the value of our training. Nothing replaces going to sea with your teams and flying with your teams against live assets. We have a tremendous opportunity to hone our skills as allies, and build upon our tactical excellence.”
