Marines from 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division put their skills to the test in a competition that included shooting, land navigation and training drills in Military Operations in Urban Terrain at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 12-16.
“It was a really good experience coming out here and training in a situation where there is an actual enemy we can fight,” said Lance Cpl. Benjamin Whitley, an assistant automatic rifleman with 2nd Bn., 6th Marines. “The Marines who acted as the enemy definitely made the situations more realistic.”
The Marines from both squads were evaluated on both the speed and efficiency which they could take down targets, in situations that they would likely encounter in a combat zone.
“Our team leader went down and we had to work quickly to establish control and get back in the fight as soon as possible,” said Whitley. “We did very well as a unit and these events were great practice.”
The Marines competed in a number of live-fire events and were evaluated on how quickly they could engage the targets and eliminate the notional enemy.
“The squad competition is a great way for us to come together as a unit,” Whitley said. “It’s the super bowl of the Marine Corps.”
