BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. – The mission of the 2nd Maintenance Squadron Fabrication Flight metals tech shop is to provide welding and machining to aircraft and aircraft components and support equipment.
When an aircraft or a vehicle needs a new part, shops can contact metals tech to create the component they need.
“We manufacture parts that are no longer made available through supply or local purchase,” said Staff Sgt. Brent Ray, 2nd MXS Fabrication Flight aircraft metals technology craftsman.
When it comes to building parts, metals tech uses the Computer Numerical Controlled, a machine that takes a design and cuts metal to make the part.
When a component or piece of equipment is broken, the shop will repair it by welding the damaged part, unless a replacement is required to be purchased.
“Welding fuses metal together so we can properly repair components,” said Senior Airman Brandon Telles, 2nd MXS Fabrication Flight aircraft metals technology journeyman. “It’s our way of fixing it without replacing it.”
If there are holes where a pin fits or the holes get out of tolerance, they bush the hole or fill it to the original size of the manufacturer. This saves the trouble of having to remove the part and get a new one.
“Welding is kind of a money saver,” said Telles. “Most stuff can be welded so it doesn’t have to be replaced because it can be a lot of money to get a new part.”
