NEW YORK – Soldiers of the New York National Guard’s 107th Military Police held a ceremony on Friday, September 29th, as they prepared to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel.
The 29 Soldiers, led by Sgt. 1st Class Kristen Perkins, will complete training at Fort Bliss, Texas, before heading overseas where they will serve as a protection team for International Security Assistance Force personnel.
The Soldiers were handpicked for the mission, a bittersweet decision for First Sgt. Adam Meyer, 107th Military Police Company.
“When we put this team together, the commander continued to recommend names and I continued to get upset,” he said. “Not because I thought they were incapable but because the selfish part of me as a First Sergeant didn’t want to lose them for the duration of a deployment.”
Sgt. 1st Class Perkins praised the group, pointing out how they excelled at Protective Services School, “They’ve come together nicely and I expect a lot out of them.”
Their skill for the mission comes not only from their MP training, but also their experiences as civilians, 1st. Sgt. Meyer says.
“You’re looking at an impressive spectrum: we have EMTs and college students, a freelance film crew member, a member of the SWAT team, we have carpenters and entrepreneurs,” he said. “We have contractors, firemen, dock workers, and fraud investigators…being capable at one job is enough for most people. Being proficient at two jobs is quite admirable.”
The team is expected to return in the summer of 2017.
