CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marines begin to dig into the soil, creating defensible fighting positions as they prepare for an attack. Oppositional forces maneuver toward the defense as a test of the Marines’ ability to create lasting combat fortifications.
Marines with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment conducted defensive and offensive maneuvers by implementing various weapons, equipment and fortifications during a field training exercise at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Sept. 28.
The defensive operations were part of a ten-day exercise that also included offensive combat scenarios in a wide area of the base. Companies worked side-by-side for the duration of the exercise, adding to their defensive strength.
“We are building our defensive positions in preparation for enemy contact,” said 2nd Lt. Jordan I. Spear, a platoon commander for Fox Co. “Digging our positions all day also helps instill discipline in the Marines to focus on training that could one day save their lives.”
This exercise helped expand on their defensive skills as the Marines dealt with the challenge of digging into uneven terrain and still positioning themselves in correlation with one another. Overcoming this environmental challenge ensures they build strong defenses and remain in contact with the rest of the unit.
“We as Marines are trained for the offense, but you never know when we could end up in the defense,” said Lance Cpl. Miles D. Parcel, a machine gunner with the unit. “We have to be ready for any situation, even if that means letting the enemy come to us.”
The Marines participating with the defense were only breached one time throughout the exercise showing great improvement to the Marine’s defensive fortification capabilities.
