Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets, and local middle and high school music students came to see the band as a part of Fleet Week’s Navigate the Fleet Education Day. The event provided information for students and children interested in the Navy Band Music Program, as well as a brief history of the Navy Band.

Jordan Wesson, a vocal major at Connexions: A Community Based Art School, said she had considered joining the Navy before, but she found today’s event excited her because it gave her more motivation to pursue her career in music through the Navy.

“I’ve always wanted to serve my country and I love the water, and the college tuition benefits are amazing,” said Wesson. “But knowing there are opportunities to do something I love, sing, while I’m serving my country, has really given me a new angle to think about. All of the performers today were amazing, so I think I’d really have to step up my game!”

Though the concert was open to the public, Senior Chief Petty Officer Leon Alexander, the band’s drummer and unit leader, said the real objective of the day was to show children the options they have to foster their musical talents.

“Our goal today is to educate the youth,” said Alexander. ”We’re gearing up to show them what the Navy has to offer them as far as a career in music.”

Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore is a time-honored observance of the sea services. With approximately 2,500 Sailors and Marines in attendance, 2016 marks the first time that the City of Baltimore is hosting a Navy Fleet Week.
