In the United States, October is recognized as Energy Action Month as declared by the President each year.

During that time, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, officials and the installation’s energy conservation team rededicated themselves to reducing the station’s energy waste.

“Energy Action Month is the chance for us here at Miramar to focus on making sure that we’re doing our best to protect our natural resources and conserve as much energy as we possibly can,” said Col. Jason Woodworth, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar.

Over the last six years, MCAS Miramar has been reducing the cost and amount of energy used on the installation by finding ways to increase efficiency, use renewable energy and reduce water waste.

“Our base’s utility bill amounts to $14 million a year,” said Mick Wasco, the installation energy manager for MCAS Miramar. “If we were to save a mere two percent in electricity that could be over $100,000 saved a year.”

The installation is also working on a microgrid project that will utilize energy generated from the Miramar landfill and solar panels to make MCAS Miramar independent from the San Diego power grid.

“We will be able to power 100 percent of over 100 mission critical buildings with this project,” said Wasco. “If we were to lose power in the event of an earthquake other natural disaster, we will be able to control our own fate and continue operations.”

MCAS Miramar has received several awards in recognition of the installation’s energy efficiency. These awards include the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Award for Energy in 2014, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District’s Clean Air Award in 2015 and the Secretary of the Navy’s Platinum Energy Award in 2016.

“Be smart about your energy and don’t waste it,” said Woodworth. “Together we can reduce the amount of energy we use to help us be a more productive air station.”
