    Kirkpatrick trained in California and then joined the 306th Bombardment Group in Thurleigh, England. On his third mission flying over France, Kirkpatrick was shot down and captured by Nazi forces and was sent to a POW camp. Kirkpatrick was freed from the POW camp June 8, 1945, and then returned to the United States. After World War II, Kirkpatrick transitioned to the reserves and worked with the civil service at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He returned to service during the Korean War where he worked to establish supply depots for troops. In May of 1958, Kirkpatrick retired from service and continued his work with the civil service where he retired as a logistics specialist in 1976.
