The 28th CSH is currently deployed as the medical hub for Operation Inherent Resolve, providing administrative oversight for a variety of medical and surgical teams within Iraq while also providing the ability to stabilize, hold, and stage critically ill and injured patients awaiting aeromedical evacuation from the combat theater.
During his visit, Thetford met with other senior enlisted leaders to discuss current operations and the important role the combat support hospital plays in the operational planning process. Later Thetford and Jones toured the field hospital and received detailed briefings about the robust medical capabilities the combat support hospital brings to the coalition effort to weaken and defeat Da’esh, an Arabic acronym for Islamic State of Syria and the Levant.
“I really feel a lot better knowing this is here and seeing the capability you have,” Thetford remarked after spending time in the various specialized areas of the hospital and speaking to the Soldiers who staff them. In addition to listening to the briefings these Soldiers presented, Thetford took time to ask each one about their personal history and goals for the future.
“I love it when leaders of any level, especially such senior leaders, come to visit their people. It shows they have real concern for their Soldiers,” remarked Capt. Julia Brigman, an operating room nurse assigned to the 28th CSH.
While touring the surgical services area of the field hospital, Thetford recognized two Soldiers, Capt. Brigman, and Spc. Rogniqua Gilliard, a surgical technician, presenting them each with a coin for their exemplary work supporting the theater-wide mission of the 28th CSH.
Combat support hospitals provide the highest level of medical care available in the deployed setting and offer an array of advanced specialties, including trauma and resuscitation care, orthopedics, critical care, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, comprehensive dental care, radiology services, blood bank, and behavioral health services. “We’re definitely bringing something valuable to the fight,” said the senior noncommissioned officer, 28th CSH, Command Sgt. Maj. Theodore Rivera.
The 28th CSH has been deployed to Iraq since summer of 2016. The first of its kind to be deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the 28th CSH was tasked with establishing a new field hospital and standing-up advanced medical and surgical capacity which was previously less accessible to Coalition service members. Thetford’s visit afforded hospital leaders the opportunity to highlight their Soldiers’ skills and contributions while affirming the unit’s commitment to sustaining the Coalition in its fight to defeat Da’esh.
Rivera affirmed, “Anytime anyone brings someone to our door, rest assured we will provide the best healthcare possible.”
