The Idaho Army National Guard bid a fond farewell to the 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion and activated the 116th Brigade Engineer Battalion at a ceremony Oct. 1, 2016 at Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho.
The newly established 116 BEB retains many of the support elements of the BSTB while expanding upon engineering capabilities. The transition is part of a larger Army-wide change to provide greater engineer support to maneuver brigades.
The recent activation builds on a strong engineering heritage and the engineer spirit. The 116 BSTB was established as a brand new unit, headquartered in Twin Falls, Idaho on March 16, 2006 and was called into federal service and mobilized in September 2010 through 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn, serving primarily around Baghdad.
Prior to the BSTB, engineers of the 116th have participated in every major US conflict since 1889.
The 116 BSTB’s distinctive unit insignia was approved on June 19, 2007. The lightning bolt signifies the Brigade's electronic communication capabilities. The gray dagger with light blue details, illustrates the col-ors of Military Intelligence, and the covert and aggressive requirements of the Combat Team. The embattled base denotes the unit's Engineers, paving the way for the Brigade Combat Team. The snake alludes to the Snake River Valley, an Idaho landmark and the Brigade's home station. The three stars represent the stars from the Flag of Iraq, denoting the Combat Team's campaign credit during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The motto "AD CAPULUM" translates to "To The Hilt."
