FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – Soldiers from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) conducted a cordon-and-search mission with Iraqi national policemen in the Rusafa Security District of eastern Baghdad, July 1.

Troop A, 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment Soldiers and policeman from 3rd Battalion, 8th Brigade, 2nd National Police Division searched the Turkmen Club, a social club for Iraqi men. The company-level operation was part of a larger squadron-level effort named Operation Normandy, explained Capt. James Carrier, Troop A acting commander.

The Soldiers conducted a cordon and search after receiving intelligence that key Special Groups cell members and possibly other extremists might be present at the club, said Carrier, a Grosse Pointe, Mich. native.

The 3rd Sqdn., 89th Cav. Soldiers and 3rd Bn., 8th Bde., 2nd NP Div. policemen uncovered a variety of weapons and related items inside the club. They found 10 AK-47 rifles, 48 magazines with ammunition, two grenades with fuses, a rocket-propelled grenade sight and a large quantity of body armor, said Carrier.

Although no SG members were found at the club during the cordon and search, the mission was considered a good deterrent against any illegal activities at the club said, Staff Sgt. Nathan Koch, a Troop A non-commissioned officer from Phoenix. "It lets the enemy know that we're keeping an eye on their activities," he stated.

It had been a while since Troop A Soldiers had worked with the national police, explained Carrier, saying the overall experience of working with national policemen was positive.

"They're pretty squared away and motivated. Their lieutenants took charge, and there wasn't much of us having to tell them what to do," said Carter. "They went right in and started searching and started bringing weapons down and laying them out. It's good to see that their leaders are leading their men without a whole lot of direction from us, so we were pleased to see that."

Koch echoed Carter's appreciation for the policemen.

"I've seen a big difference from when we first got here," said Koch. "They're (national policemen) going in and they know exactly what to do."
