AUBURN, Wash. – The city of Auburn held their 51st annual Veterans Day parade, Nov. 5.

The parade, which is one of the largest in the U.S., had a military flyover, over 30 marching bands including Navy Band Northwest, received more than 200 entries and had nearly 6,000 participants. The parade route ran west along Main Street, from E Street to Auburn’s City Hall.

Among those marching in the parade was one of the newest female submariners, Petty Officer 1st Class Nicole Arnold. Arnold, a Tidioute, Pennsylvania native, has been stationed aboard USS Michigan (SSGN 727) since September. She walked at the head of the submarine veterans of Bremerton Base holding their banner.

“It was awesome marching in the parade,” said Arnold. “I could hear people saying ‘oh it’s the submarines’ and its just really nice that there are people are out here supporting veterans.”

Even though it rained the morning of the parade, hundreds of people lined Main Street to show their support for the veterans. Auburn native Robin Jones has been to every one of Auburn’s Veterans Day Parades since 2004, rain or shine.

“These guys don’t get to hear ‘thank you’ nearly enough,” said Jones. “Thank you so much for your service, you are greatly appreciated.”

The appreciation the crowd showed to the veterans and active duty service members was not lost on those marching in the parade.

“It makes me proud that we have a lot of people that come out and watch us,” said Samuel Swenson Jr. Swenson served for more than 30 years and retired as a chief warrant officer 4. “It makes me proud to do my part.”

According to Auburn’s website, the purpose of Auburn's Veterans Day Parade is to positively focus on honoring the country's veterans and active military personnel and focusing recognition on congressionally-recognized Veteran Service Organizations and their auxiliaries, the military and reserve military, National Guard and ROTC.

“It is an honor to be out here showing support for the veterans,” said Arnold. “I just love being a part of it and being able to help them out.”
