CAMP PENDLETON, Calif -- The Department of Defense awarded the Camp Pendleton Fire Department three awards for their performance during the fiscal year of 2015, Nov. 7.
The Navy Fire and Emergency Services annually recognizes the most outstanding Fire Departments, Fire Prevention Departments, Fire Officer, Fire Service Instructor, Fire Instructor, EMS Provider and Firefighter Heroism Award to Fire Departments in each branch of service.
“The DOD Fire and Emergency Services submit their top performers, whether it is the individual or a certain department to their components headquarters, and the DOD board presents the awards accordingly to the services,” said Tom Thompson, Fire Chief, Camp Pendleton Fire Department.
Camp Pendleton’s Fire Department was awarded Fire Department of the Year, Fire Prevention of the Year, and Jeff Moore was awarded Civilian Fire Officer of the Year as a Fire Captain for the Camp Pendleton Fire Department.
Camp Pendleton won the award for best overall fire department for their outstanding performance in 2013.
“Camp Pendleton took some top notch awards, we took three of four biggest awards offered,” said Thompson. “Our Marines are high risk takers, because of that we get to practice our craft every single day.”
The DOD looks for innovations, initiatives, leadership ability, training and education when determining the winners.
“We are here to serve Camp Pendleton’s residents, so it’s an honor,” said Jeff Moore, Division Chief, Camp Pendleton Fire Department. “To be recognized for doing my job, it makes it feel worthwhile and humbling, based on my merits and the things I do for the department, the DOD must have felt it was worth the award.”
These annual team awards recognize the fire departments who achieve the highest degree of excellence in mission and fire protection management.
“I think we are very competitive when it comes to the call volumes and the impact we make every day,” said Thompson. “Receiving these awards, I think it proves to our customers, they truly have one of the best response agencies protecting them 24/7.”
