Bahrain based Marines are no exception, as they celebrated the Marine Corps birthday a few days earlier, Nov. 5, along with Sailors, family members and honored international guests hosted by Naval Amphibious Force, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

The birthday ball begun with a customary Marine Corps birthday message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Robert B. Neller and Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green, the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, highlighting Marines’ rich history and tradition.

“The cohesion of a unit involves physical, spiritual and cognitive connection of Marines in that unit because we are a team. We remember the team, we remember the people we serve with, we remember the hard times, remember the good times and when you leave the Corps as we are all going to do eventually one day, I think that’s the thing that people miss,” said Neller in his video addressing Marines from all walks of life. “They miss that feeling of being part of something bigger than themselves.”

The ceremony continued with the reading of 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. John A. Lejeune Birthday Message and the cake cutting ceremony, one of the main staples of the Corps’ birthday celebration. It is customary that two pieces of cake be cut during the ceremony; one for the guest of honor and one for the oldest Marine who passes it on to the youngest Marine, representing the old and experienced Marines passing their knowledge on to the newest generation of Marines.

“The more I learn of what you do here, the more I appreciate your service and your dedication to our country and to your Corps. I know that it is a great honor to be called a Marine and I know that you all are proud of that long standing tradition,” said U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain William V. Roebuck. “Ever since its founding in 1775, the Corps has demanded from its Marines the values of honor, courage and commitment. These traditions of the Marine Corps and its history are enduring source of ethos, pride and professionalism.”

The Ambassador thanked the Marines and sailors currently serving in Bahrain, to include Marine Security Guard detachment, Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team-Central Command and CTF 51/5 with Brig. Gen. Francis L. Donovan in command of the newest Navy and Marine Corps integrated team.

“You are truly brave soldiers of the sea, carrying the torch of freedom forward, worthy successors to the long line of illustrious Marines who have gone before. God bless you and God bless the United States of America, happy birthday Marines,” said Roebuck in closing.
