CAMP MCCAIN, Miss.— The 66th Troop Command conducted its Best Warrior Competition at Camp McCain, Miss. on Nov. 7-10, 2016.

The Best Warrior Competition is a series of event to engage and push a Soldier’s mental agility, physical toughness, and technical proficiency to the limit over a span of three days, said Brig. Gen. John Rhodes, commander of 66th Troop Command.

“Technical proficiency and physical agility are evaluated with weapons qualifications, battle drills known as Warrior Tasks, the Amy Physical Fitness Test, combatives, an obstacle course and a road march", said Master Sgt. Mandy Ponder, the personnel non-commissioned officer for 66th Troop Command.

The mental agility portion of the competition was evaluated by Soldiers completing a written essay and answering questions before a board of senior non-commissioned officers.

The 66th TC and the other major commands throughout the state conduct events like the Best Warrior Competition to build readiness and camaraderie within the Mississippi National Guard, said Rhodes.

“Our biggest challenge from a readiness standpoint is Soldier’s physical fitness level,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Craig Paine, the senior non-commissioned officer of the 112th Military Police battalion. “Putting on competitions such as this one builds that culture of physical fitness in the Mississippi National Guard.”

This type of event is so well rounded it gets Soldiers ready for all types of military operations whether it is deployment, state emergency, or training exercises, said Rhodes.

Selected Soldiers representing five units from across the state participated in the competition after having won their perspective subordinate unit’s placement criteria.

The number of units that came together to compete in the competition was great, and the event did well with promoting that sense of teamwork in the Mississippi National Guard as a whole, said Paine.

It was good to have the variety of units participate in this because a soldier could be reassigned to any unit at anytime, said Rhodes.

“Soldiers will take what they have learned back to the formations and spread the knowledge,” said Rhodes.

The competition inspired and gave Soldiers the chance to learn new things, said Pfc. Heather Hill, automated supply logistics specialist with the 1108th Aviation Group in Gulfport, Miss.

Of the 12 participants, four will advance to the next level to compete against the other major command winners in the Mississippi Army National Guard's state competition in the spring.
