PORT HUENEME, Calif. - Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) hosted a joint end of year showcase for the Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) Program with Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) at the NSWC PHD Command Conference Room Nov. 8.
NISE was established by the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretaries of the Military to provide a mechanism for funding research and development within the laboratories of the Department of Defense. The goal of the program is to grow the internal technical capabilities of the workforce through research projects, technical training and other workforce development innovations.
"NAVFAC EXWC was recently recognized by the Navy through its acceptance into the Naval Research & Development Establishment (NR&DE) Leadership on October 16, 2016," said NAVFAC EXWC Technical Director, Kail Macias. "2016 was our pilot year in the NISE Program. We look forward to continued support and participation with our NSWC PHD counterpart in the NISE program and future collaboration between all NR&DE warfare centers and laboratories."
NAVFAC EXWC, a relatively new warfare center established in 2012, piloted their NISE program in FY16 with four projects that were presented by the Principle Investigators alongside their NSWC PHD counterparts. The four projects were: one, using UAVs for natural resource monitoring; two, increasing the corrosion resistance of concrete; three, assessing the cyber vulnerabilities of our metering infrastructure; four, using technology to increase the accuracy of the modified surf index (MSI) that determines when it is safe for Navy crafts to land on the beach. The event, open to all employees, provided the opportunity to learn about the interesting and innovative projects completed as a part of the NISE program from both commands and provided the venue to encourage future collaboration between the warfare centers.
