Chambersburg, Pa. -- Letterkenny Munitions Center recently hosted approximately 20 local community leaders and four members of the press for an open house and tour, here, September 28.

Attendees included staff members from Sen. Pat Toomey and Congressman Bill Shuster's offices and Pennsylvania Representative Paul Schemel. Also attending were two members of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the Letterkenny Army Depot commander and key members of his staff. In addition, the chairman and executive director of the Pennsylvania Military Community Enhancement Commission, and representatives from the Letterkenny Industrial Development Authority, Franklin County Area Development Corporation, and the Chambersburg Area School District attended.

Guests arrived in the morning and met with Lt. Col. Trenton Conner, commander of LEMC, and members of his team to discuss LEMC's value to both the Department of Defense and the local community. Following the discussion, they toured LEMC operations, focusing on missile maintenance and demilitarization.

Visitors previewed LEMC's Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket Motor Thermal Destruction Facility, in advance of an upcoming ribbon cutting ceremony in early 2017. This new, one-of-a-kind facility is being built to support demilitarization of Ammonium Perchlorate Based Composite Rocket Motors and upon completion, the chamber will facilitate an environmentally-friendly means to dispose of AP based rocket motors, such as the Multiple Launch Rocket System and Sidewinder rocket motors.

Next, they toured the MLRS Family of Munitions facilities. LEMC is designated as the Army's Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Army Tactical Missile System, Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rocket. LEMC employees perform maintenance, repair, modification, parts reclamation, disassembly, container repair and global mobile maintenance on these missiles.

The tour concluded at LEMC's demilitarization facilities with a demonstration of static fire of rocket motors and below-ground detonation of expired munitions. Guests also learned about LEMC's environmental compliance and improvements, including environmental maintenance, the recycling program and burning ground improvements. The new ARMD facility will greatly reduce the need for static burn of rocket motors, reducing both noise and environmental pollution.

"Today's event is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate to our community stakeholders LEMC's strategic value to the Department of Defense, the Army enterprise, and the Pennsylvania military community," said Lt. Col. Trenton J. Conner, commander of Letterkenny Munitions Center. "Our community leaders saw, personally, how we provide readiness to the Joint Force with the timely distribution of munitions, missile maintenance for all services, and the efficient demilitarization of munitions."

LEMC is located on Letterkenny Army Depot and is a government-owned, government-operated installation. LEMC conducts regional and global distribution of munitions, provides missile maintenance, and conducts demilitarization of munitions for Joint Forces and international partner nations.
