    II Marine Expeditionary Force

Over 300 Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 8, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, participate in a certification exercise for an upcoming deployment at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, N.C., from Nov. 14 through Nov. 19.

The CERTEX is the final portion of their training, designed to demonstrate capability and certify the Logistics Combat Element is manned and trained to forward deploy in order to provide combat service support to elements of the of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Africa.

“This exercise provides us with a great [opportunity] to demonstrate how capable we are in employing our skills in any location,” said Staff Sgt. Ivan Colina, theater security cooperation heavy equipment chief with the unit. “Every Marine in our team is dedicated to accomplishing the mission.”

The Marines and sailors are being evaluated by 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group and Marine Corps Engineer School throughout the exercise in a variety of scenarios.

“The biggest challenge was working with Marines from different professions,” Colina said. “However, the leadership from each team was able to help us overcome our obstacles and prove that we are one team; one fight.”

While being evaluated the CERTEX provides CLB-8 with a visceral experience essential to performing mission essential task and operating in a forward deployed environment; as well as detect areas that require improvement in order to enhance mission readiness

“I want my Marines to [discover] what their weaknesses are and build upon them,” said Capt. Bryce Saddoris, a theater security cooperation team leader in the unit. “It is important to [reinforce] our weak points to effectively apply our skills in a deployed environment.”

Overall, the unit’s performance thus far while participating in the CERTEX is solid. Over the next week, CLB-8 will continue to be evaluated in order to ensure the unit is ready to forward deploy and provide combat service support to elements of the MAGTF and respond rapidly to specific, limited, emergent missions and assigned security cooperation activities.

“I am extremely confident in our abilities to complete our mission overseas,” Saddoris said. “We are passionate about our role and determined to successfully implement our training in a real world scenario.”
