On November 10, 2016, over one hundred sixth grade students from the Interdistrict School for Arts and Communication in New London, Connecticut, toured the Coast Guard Research and Development Center in New London.
The students were greeted by Capt. Dennis Evans, commanding officer of the RDC. Lt. Keely Higbie and Lt. Joe DiRenzo provided an overview of the Coast Guard, and discussed how science and technology play a role in everyday Coast Guard missions. The students then toured various sections of the RDC. At the General Engineering Laboratory Support area they learned about RDC efforts to test and improve lighted aids to navigation. The project demonstration area allowed the students to view and touch groundbreaking RDC projects from the past. In the Automatic Identification System laboratory they heard about the integration of GPS, AIS, and texting technology to improve vessel collision avoidance and maritime emergency response around the nation. The students also learned about two other very important Coast Guard units located alongside the RDC in New London: the International Ice Patrol which tracks icebergs and alerts international shipping to iceberg dangers, and the Marine Safety Laboratory which forensically analyzes, catalogs, and stores oil samples recovered from oil spills across the nation.
The demonstrations and tours are part of an on-going partnership between the ISAAC school and the RDC to get elementary students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, commonly referred to as STEM.
