Soldiers, family and friends of the Marne Reception Center, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade welcomed a new commander and bid farewell to the old during a change of command ceremony Nov. 22 at the reception center on Fort Stewart, Ga.
The outgoing commander, Capt. Torshal R. Cook, relinquished her duties to the incoming commander, Capt. Vernita D. Handsborough, the former STB operations officer.
“Capt. Handsborough has an outstanding reputation, leading Soldiers both as a noncommissioned officer and an officer,” said Lt. Col. Michael D. Hagerty, the STB commander. “She is absolutely the professional that is required for this position.”
The Marne Reception Center is responsible for the reception, staging, onward movement and integration of all new Soldiers and their family members assigned to Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. The division’s combat readiness is sustained by ensuring all individuals in-process and participate in the orientation briefings and stations.
Over the span of 14 months as the commander, Cook and her team in-processed more than 8,000 Soldiers into the division, taking them through the Soldier Readiness Center, the Soldier Service Center, and the Central Issue Facility to complete a variety of medical, financial and clothing requirements.
“It has been the most rewarding position I have ever held,” Cook said. “I loved it because I love Soldiers.”
She will now return to STB to work as the battalion’s intelligence officer.
