Maj. Gen. Walter Miller Jr., II MEF general, presented the Admiral Elmo Zumwalt Award for Lodging Excellence to the Camp Lejeune Fisher House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Nov. 16.

The Fisher house was donated to the Secretary of the Navy and was then operated by the Commander Naval Installations Command Navy Lodging Program. The achievement of this award requires constant quality living quarters for the patrons living there and a team of staff members striving for excellence.

"The Admiral Elmo Zumwalt Award for Lodging Excellence was given to this site after it was accredited by a team that inspected everything," said Josie Callahan, the general manager of the Camp Lejeune Fisher House. "They looked behind pictures for dust, they checked with guests to make sure they were being accommodated, that they were able to get to the site easily and that everything was the utmost for the guests."

The guests there are supporting their loved ones in medical care with appointments at the Naval Hospital or at Wounded Warrior Battalion next to the facility. The main purpose of the Fisher House is to provide military families a place to stay while their loved ones are being taken care of.

"It’s not just the fact that you have a place to stay," said Pamela Smith, a guest living in the Camp Lejeune Fisher House. "It’s the support that they offer. It’s them making sure you’re okay and making sure you’re taken care of so you don’t have to worry about the little day to day things."

Smith has been staying in the Fisher House for more than half a year taking care of her son who is currently in Wounded Warrior Battalion East waiting for medical retirement.

"The staff members here are very professional, and they have their jobs to do, but they see me day in and day out taking care of my son, and I wouldn’t have made it without them," said Smith. "I wish my son was well, but being here and being able to take care of him is a blessing."
