Each year, Corpus Christi’s Naval Flight School holds a Fleet and Family Event for its students and invites squadrons to participate to allow student naval aviators the opportunity to view the various platforms available and speak with experienced pilots in the fleet.
“This event is a great opportunity to interact with experienced pilots and pick their brains for knowledge and information of aircraft and the community,” said 2nd Lieutenant Alec M. Jarm, a student naval aviator with MATSG-22.
During the event, five of VMGR-234’s aircrew members spoke with around 200 students and their families about the C-130J and allowed them to tour aircraft to help Marines come to a decision over what aircraft they will choose to fly. The Rangers also gave insight to the students on what the fleet outside of school is like.
“[The Fleet and Family Event] introduces flight students to the fleet. It takes student naval aviators two to four years to hit the fleet, so this event allows them to interact with pilots that can explain to them and their families what to expect in regards to deployments and spousal arrangements,” said Capt Jeff D. Redmon, an instructor pilot with MATSG-22.
The Fleet and Family Event, a multiday event, also included guest speakers from Bell Helicopter and Lockheed Martin and an F-35 simulator.
VMGR-234’s focus on mission readiness allowed them to rapidly transition from an assignment supporting another squadron in Gulfport, Mississippi the day before when unexpectedly tasked with supporting the Fleet and Family Event in Corpus Christi.
