FORT STEWART, Ga. - Infantrymen from 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, along with other Soldiers from across 3rd ID, gathered at Fort Benning, Georgia to put their knowledge and skills to the test in hopes of obtaining the Expert Infantryman Badge Sept. 19 - Oct. 6 and Oct.17- Nov. 4.
The EIB is earned by successfully completing a series of tests that measure the mastery of individual skills through different evaluations taking place over a five-day period.
Tests consist of 37 individual tasks, from assembling and disassembling weapon systems to treating a combat casualty. Participants are strictly graded and are required to complete each task according to infantry manuals to pass.
“Soldiers must maintain attention to detail, which teaches them to perfect their skills,” said Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Cardinal, first sergeant of Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 2nd IBCT.
For many infantrymen, the EIB is seen as a right of passage and earning the badge is looked highly upon by the infantry community.
“EIB is a great experience, especially for young Soldiers,” said Pfc. Jacob Nance, infantryman with Alpha Company, 3-7th Inf. “It gives us a chance to prove ourselves and opens doors for future schools.”
Soldiers who have earned their EIB are chosen to be graders to enforce the standard.
“It is an honor to be hand-selected as a grader and welcome new Soldiers to the brotherhood,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Baumgardner, infantryman and EIB grader with 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID.
During the two iterations, 149 infantrymen from 2nd IBCT took part in the EIB competition. A total of 49 Spartans prevailed to meet the standard and receive their badge of honor.
