Camp Pendleton hosts the 2016 Trees for Troops at Wire Mountain field, December 3.
The program is an annual event designed to provide free Christmas trees to service members and their families.
“We are here to support the Trees for Troops Operation, basically we are going to be offloading trees and donating them to the service members in Camp Pendleton,” said Ron Sherman, Operation Supervisor for FedEx San Bernardino.
For many participants, the addition of a real Christmas tree brings the holidays to life.
“I think it is a great event in supporting the troops,” said Corporal Zackary Dence, Generator Mechanic Marine Corps Installation – West G-4. “It is important to me because it shows there are people still out there supporting our troops.”
Dence arrived at 4:30 a.m. to the event, nearly five hours before the trees arrived, to secure his place as first in line.
The event also included stockings for the kids, music, games and prizes.
“I would rather have a real tree, with the smell of the pine throughout the house,” said Dence. “I would to thank all the volunteers and Happy Holidays to those here and aboard.”
In 2015, Trees for Troops delivered 18,833 farm-grown Christmas Trees to service members and their families. The trees were donated by roughly 450 Christmas tree growers, retailers and their customers in 25 states, according to their website.
“It always makes you feel good to give back, especially to the Marines here,” said Sherman. “Making sure everyone has a good Christmas and everyone is here helping out so it’s a really good feeling.”
Trees for Troops has donated over 176,000 trees to service members and their families throughout the U.S. and overseas since the program began in 2005.
