FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – A National Police division commanding general visited Forward Operating Base Loyalty in eastern Baghdad to meet with Iraqi security force and U.S. Army officials, July 12.

Iraqi policeman Maj. Gen. Abdul Kareem, commanding general of 1st National Police Division, met with National police, Iraqi army, traffic police and U.S. National Police Transition Team leaders to discuss operations in eastern Baghdad. This was the second time such a meeting has taken place. Leaders from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) hosted the event to facilitate efforts among the forces, making it easier to better coordinate security and operational efforts.

"The purpose of this meeting was to facilitate the Iraqi security forces as they manage and run the security meeting, going over their security plans and operations while coordinating with the different components of the ISF," explained Maj. Watson Caudill, ISF deputy coordinator for the 4th BCT from Manhattan, Kan. "This meeting allows the Iraqi police, National police and traffic police to meet and coordinate with each other, which would not normally happen."

Kareem told the leaders Iraqi security forces are mitigating threats from improvised rocket-assisted mortar attacks to keep U.S. Soldiers safe and to protect Forward Operating Base Loyalty and the headquarters of 1st and 2nd Brigades, 1st National Police Division.

Also during the meeting, each brigade leader gave a brief summary of the previous week's activities. American leaders assigned to National Police Transition Teams talked about training for a management cycle, checkpoint security forces and the need for more joint patrols with the Iraqi army.

"The division commander asked each brigade leader to give a briefing on caches, cordon and searches, future operations and other concerns," explained Master Sgt. Monte Absheir, a Fayetteville, Ark., native, and ISF non-commissioned officer-in-charge for 4th BCT, 10th Mtn. Div. "The main topics were IRAM mitigation, the training management cycle and joint operations."

This was the second meeting of ISF leaders Kareem organized to discuss activities, unit needs and future operations. In an ongoing partnership, 4th BCT, 10th Mtn. Div. leaders facilitated ISF leaders as they discussed ways to assist the citizens of eastern Baghdad in any way possible. They collaborated and shared their experiences and operational plans with each other for the benefit of all.
