A yuletide essential was delivered to Marines, soldiers and sailors living aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow as the Trees for Troops program delivered fresh cut Christmas trees Dec. 7.
Active duty military personnel and their families turned out at the Desert View Estates community center aboard base to claim a Christmas tree from Federal Express in partnership with the Christmas Spirit Foundation.
Scott Graham, marketing manager, Marine Corps Community Services Camp Pendleton, said MCCS has participated in the Tree for Troops program for at least 15 years.
“FedEx has delivered 100 fresh trees from Oregon,” Graham said. “They’re available to active duty military personnel and their families. If there are any left over then National Guard members and their families will get them.”
Donning Santa hats in the iconic purple and white of FedEx, Marines and soldiers helped unload the wrapped trees and display them in the parking lot of the community center while about 50 people, including children, gathered for the event to carefully consider their selections before giving one a home for Christmas.
Danielle Fernandez, wife of Gunnery Sgt. Luis Fernandez, assigned to the Marine Corps Police Department, and their 11-month-old daughter Harper were at the event to pick out the perfect specimens; one large tree for the living room and a smaller one perched atop the toddler’s baby carriage to be carted home.
“I think the Trees for Troops program is awesome,” Mrs. Fernandez said. “I really appreciate what FedEx has done for the Marines.”
