FORT SHAFTER- As part of Lighting Rescue 2008, a pandemic influenza exercise on Kauai next week, the Army's 307th Signal Battalion's Company C will set up and operate a mobile command post communication package at Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai.
Seven specially designed Army Humvees, trucks, and a tractor-trailer loaded with communication equipment rolled out of Schofield Barracks early this morning for Pearl Harbor. At the Waipio peninsula rendezvous point, the vehicles were driven onto the deck of the Army logistics support vessel, MG Charles P. Gross. The LSV, operated by the 545th Transportation Detachment, departed at 9 a.m. for its 12-hour journey to Nawiliwili Harbor, where the vehicles will be offloaded and driven to PMRF Saturday morning.
The 307th Signal Battalion operates satellite communication gear packaged into small tactical vehicles that can be quickly air or sea-lifted into remote areas. They can provide command and control communications for the military units anywhere in the world.
For the pandemic influenza exercise at PMRF on July 24, the 307th Battalion Soldiers, along with over 200 military and civilian personnel from Oahu and Kauai, will test their abilities to mobilize, set up, and operate a quarantine area to contain a deadly virus from spreading further.
