“One of the top injuries we see among our Sailors aboard the ship is dehydration,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Jessica Zunk, assigned to Pre-Commissioning Unit Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN 78) Medical department.

The human body consists of over 70% of water and the loss of only 5% can lead to dehydration. In a matter of 60-90 minutes of physical activity the human body can loose up to 2-3% of water and in roughly two hours a Sailor can be on the verge of dehydration, stated by Zunk.

According to Today’s Dietitian, a nutrition and wellness magazine, 30-50% of adolescents and young adults in the United States consume energy drinks, soda, or other surgery beverages. Zunk states that this is a problem that has been seen on the Ford, where Sailors replace water with other sugary beverages.

“From the time you wake up, you need to start hydrating,” said Omar Teran, Ford’s Fit Boss. “Like anything else, you have to make hydration a habit, and you make it a habit by consistency”

Three cool tips to keep in mind while working in hot conditions and staying hydrated.

    • Drink water! The best way to keep your body regulated and hydrated is to drink water and cut out other sugary drinks such as energy drinks, soda, and coffee.
    • Drink small amounts regularly. Do not instantly drink a large amount of water after working out or physical activity. Drink small quantities of water throughout the entire day.
    • Make it a work center effort. Keep an eye on your shipmates and ensure they are drinking the minimum 8-10 cups.
