OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea - Maintaining “Fight Tonight” readiness is the number one priority on the Korean Peninsula, and Soldiers assigned to Battery B, 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 35th ADA Brigade at Suwon Air Base, Republic of Korea did just that Nov. 7 – 18, 2016.

Table VIII gunnery is the culminating training event for air defense artillery Soldiers. The rigorous test is a series of practical evaluations crews must pass in order to be certified combat ready.

“Table VIII is game day, it starts early in the morning with the reconnaissance, selection and occupation of position team pushing out,” said 1st Lt. Ji Hye Jang, the battery training officer. “The team received a Q-1, a first time go, and something really hard to accomplish.”

Although many of the Table VIII requirements are repetitive in nature, the amount of steps the crew must complete in the limited amount of time is what makes passing challenging.

“In order to receive a go in assumption, one of the sub-tasks of Table VIII, all Patriot launching stations and support equipment must be operational within one hour of being emplaced,” said Jang.

After the battery successfully completed their collective training, the crews spent the rest of the field exercise certifying on standalone drills. For one crew in particular, their ability to work as a team would be put to the test.

“I’ve been working with my partner for eight days now,” said Spc. Henry Laron. “We’ve been training hard, this will be her first Table VIII, my third Table VIII, and our first one together.”

In order for the launcher crew to pass Table VIII, Soldiers must be able to successfully complete march order and emplacement. This demonstrates the crew’s ability to transition the Patriot from a position ready to engage enemy missiles, to a transportation configuration, and back to a state ready to launch interceptors.

Despite only working together for just over a week, the two demonstrated absolute teamwork as they moved in synchronization shouting out each critical step, ensuring they always knew what the other person was doing.

“Communication was the key to our success,” said Laron. “We were just yelling out, making sure we were doing things right, and it worked.”

With a passing score of 100% on march order, and 97% on emplacement, respectively, this crew is “Fight Tonight” ready.
