    II Marine Expeditionary Force

Many members of Zickefoose’s family were in attendance, along with Maj. Gen. Walter Miller, the II MEF commanding general, and various sergeants major, both retired and currently serving.

Zickefoose has served the Marine Corps for 31 years, and has spent many of those years as a sergeant major. Though Zickefoose has been invaluable to II MEF’s capabilities, Miller is certain that Thresher will continue to lead the MEF to do great things at home and abroad.

“We’re getting a team, and (Thresher and his wife are) a familiar team,” said Miller. “I’ve watched them over the past year plus, and they’ve done a great job down at the wing. I expect that they’ll be doing the same here.”

Thresher joined the Marine Corps in April of 1990 and has since then been meritoriously promoted five times while serving throughout various deployments, operations, and assignments in the operating and supporting forces. Thresher is coming from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing where he also served as Sergeant Major, and is pleased to be joining the II MEF command.

“I’ve been around our Marine Air-Ground Task Force for quite a while so I’m pretty excited about getting (the position),” said Thresher, “ but the reasons I wanted this job are real simple: one, I love Marines, and two, I love the Carolina MAGTF.”

In keeping with Marine Corps tradition, during the ceremony Zickefoose passed off the non-commissioned officer sword to Thresher to symbolize the passing of his trust and confidence in Thresher’s capability to uphold the duties required as Sergeant Major of II MEF.

Though Zickefoose is happy to continue on with his Marine Corps journey, he says that his next assignment may just not compare to his time in II MEF.

“The reality is that I love this job. I’m going down to Southern Command, and you know, it’s not going to be the same, but it keeps me around for a few more years and I’m just happy to be here and be able to serve not just the corps, but all our services throughout our nation.”

During the post and relief ceremony, Sgt. Maj. Zickefoose was awarded with the Legion of Merit with a Gold Star in lieu of second award for his service with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.
