    403rd Wing

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Citizen Airmen from the 403rd Wing's Top Three association gathered together Sunday during the June unit training assembly to learn more about the local Air Force Sergeants Association chapter.

Staff Sgt. Brian Corbin, an instructor in the 335th Training Squadron and membership trustee for AFSA Division 4, met with Top Three wing members June 7 to talk about how the AFSA represents enlisted members of the Air Force by advancing their interests to America's elected and military leaders, and to discuss the advantages of becoming one of its more than 110,000 members.

Corbin described the mission of the AFSA, which is to advocate improved quality of life and economic fairness that will support the well-being of the Total Air Force (Air Force Active Duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command) enlisted personnel and their families.

"We have retired Air Force chiefs, senior master sergeants and so forth who will go lobby for our rights and represent our interests to Congress to help ensure that we're taken care of," said Corbin.

Corbin said he wanted help to bring a greater awareness of issues that the AFSA is lobbying for, such as retirement and veterans' status matters, to the Reserve members at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. He addressed questions they had about the association in regards to membership and the various functions the local chapter at Keesler AFB, Chapter 652, are involved. He also mentioned that AFSA members enjoy a wide variety of benefits, such as health, home and auto insurance plans, college tuition, computer and phone discounts, and other incentives.

The sergeant's presentation provided Top Three members the opportunity to see how the AFSA mission aligns with its goals of providing enlisted leadership to junior Airmen and the wing, and enhancing the morale, welfare, and status of enlisted personnel assigned to the 403rd.

Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Barnby, 403rd Wing command chief master sergeant, spoke about the importance of organizations like the AFSA in advocating for rights of Air Force enlisted members.

"It's important that we have a voice to legislation. Individually we can work with our congressmen and senators, but a collective voice is much louder than a singularity. AFSA (is one of those) collective voices that pushes the agenda of the Air Force enlisted corps and their interests, the things that affect them both 'here and now' and post-service to their country," said Barnby.

More information about the mission and how to join the Air Force Sergeants Association can be found at www.hqafsa.org.
