FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division competed in a selection Feb. 7-9 at Fort Stewart, Ga. in hopes of representing 3rd ID in this year’s Gainey Cup.
Chosen reconnaissance Soldiers compete biennially in the Gainey Cup, named after William J. Gainey, to earn the title “Best Scout Squad.” The competition is scheduled for May at Fort Benning, Ga.
6-8 Cav. created their own competition in preparation for the 3rd ID Gainey Cup selection to find the best of the best.
“The importance of this selection process is to make sure that we have the best trained squad to go and win the Gainey Cup,” said Sgt. Maj. Cory B. West, operations sergeant major of 6-8 Cav. and event coordinator.
Five teams were selected from Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Troops. They tackled several mentally and physically challenging events, including an obstacle course, vehicle identification test, reconnaissance tests, call for fire test, five-mile run, land navigation course, and a 12 mile foot march.
“The events were selected to challenge them and make them think outside the box on varied reconnaissance operations,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Oliver, senior enlisted advisor of 6-8 Cav.
This event was just as important to the troopers of 6-8 Cav. as it was to their leadership.
“It is a great opportunity to go, but to win would be great for 6-8 Cav. and 3rd ID,” said Spc. Ryne Hopper, team leader with Charlie Troop.
At the end of the event, three squads were selected to continue training on basic reconnaissance tasks and compete at the division level.
