CARTHAGE, Tenn. (March 2, 2017) – Cordell Hull Dam is offering free public tours of the powerhouse 9 a.m. Saturday, May 20, and 9 a.m. June 17.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Cordell Hull Dam is located at river mile 313.5, about five miles upstream of Carthage, Tenn. Rising 87 feet above the streambed, the combination earth fill and concrete-gravity dam is 1,306 feet long with a hydroelectric power generating plant. The plant has three 100,000 kilowatt hydropower units that produce approximately 350,000,000 kilowatts annually.
Approximately 45 minutes in length, the tour will begin at the Left Bank Parking Lot next to the Hydropower facility, near the Carthage/Turkey Creek entrance. After guest check in and a brief introduction, guests will walk to the powerhouse. Guiding guests through the facilities, Corps of Engineers personnel and volunteers will provide information about Cordell Hull Lake’s unique history, project purposes, recreational opportunities, fish and wildlife benefits, as well as, an up-close look of the dam and powerhouse facilities.
Tour participants must register for the tours at least a week prior to the desired tour date. A registration form and submission information can be found on the web at http://www.lrn.usace.army.mil/Locations/Lakes/CordellHullLake/OpenHouseTours.aspx.
