PACIFIC OCEAN—Logistics Specialist Jacolby Johnson, a native of Clinton, Missouri, was announced as Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) motivator of the week, Feb. 18.
Johnson was selected as Wayne E. Meyer’s motivator of the week for the week of Feb. 10-17 for his outstanding work performance while underway during the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group’s Western Pacific Deployment.
“Johnson has been an indispensable member of the Wayne E. Meyer crew in so many facets,” said Cmdr. Vincent A. Fortson, commanding officer of Wayne E. Meyer. “He has been involved in countless seamanship evolutions as a master helmsman. Recently his skillful hand on the helm surgically drove our ship through an underway replenishment battling the unforgiving, rough seas of the Western Pacific.”
According to Fortson, Johnson is a team player, who’s always willing to help the ship in any capacity he can. He is also a part of the corrosion control team and the crash and salvage team on the flight deck.
“I think I got nominated for motivator of the week because of my positive attitude and how I treat my fellow Sailors,” said Johnson. “I try to be as diverse as possible with my qualifications to make sure if the ship needs me, I can be there to help out.”
Johnson is a strong believer in doing the best you can and sharing knowledge.
“My advice to other Sailors trying to win this award is to stay true to yourself and work with integrity at all times,” said Johnson. “Try not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing around you and make sure you are doing everything you can to make the area around you a better place.”
Johnson graduated from Clinton Senior High School in 2013 and joined the U.S. Navy in June 2013.
Wayne E. Meyer is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet into the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. U.S. Navy carrier strike groups have regularly patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific for more than 70 years and will continue to do so. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983, a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Carl Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
This deployment is Wayne E. Meyer’s third deployment to the Western Pacific since being commissioned Oct. 10, 2009, in Philadelphia.
The ship received its name from the late Rear Adm. Wayne E. Meyer, who is regarded as the “Father of Aegis” for his service as the AEGIS weapons system manager and later for his development of the AEGIS shipbuilding project office.
