“As the Senior Commander of Fort Hunter Liggett, it’s exciting to see new infrastructure built that will endure for years to come and serve to host countless numbers of troops,” said Maj. Gen. Brian Alvin.
The ORTC consists of barracks housing up to 800 transient Soldiers, maintenance sheds, administrative offices, and supply and training space. The design includes Department of Defense anti-terrorism/force protection measures, intrusion detection systems, energy monitoring control systems, and energy efficient solutions.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, project managers for the ORTC construction, provided participants with a facility tour after the ceremony. Congressman Jimmy Panetta, 63rd Regional Support Command Commanding General, Maj. Gen. Brian Alvin; King City Mayor, Mike LeBarre; and the Fort Hunter Liggett community attended.
The Track and Field ribbon cutting ceremony was held after the ORTC event with five Army World Class Athletes (WCA) kicking-off the event. Amongst them was Silver Medalist Spec. Paul Chelimo who won the men’s 5,000 meter run during the 2016 Rio Olympics. The WCA Soldiers demonstrated Total Soldier Enhancement Training (TSET) to participants after the ceremony.
The Army World Class Athlete program trains Soldier-athletes to compete and succeed in national and international competitions leading to Olympic and Paralympic Games, while maintaining a professional military career and promoting the Army to the world.
“The Army encourages both military and civilian workforce to be ready and resilient,” said Garrison Commander Col. Jan C. Norris. “And this new track and field provides them a safe, year-round facility to improve their physical fitness.”
The Track and Field has a synthetic turf field and a multi-layered rubberized surface designed to reduce injury, provide long-term durability and have low maintenance costs.
